Rear wheel bearing surprise

I was changing the rear wheel bearing on my 2021 Highlander AWD and thought it would be easy. The guide said both sides were the same, but the passenger side had an extra bracket that made it harder. It took much longer than I expected.

I got Toyota's online manual for two days, I think it was around $20-$30. If you're doing work like this, get the right info first. It can save you time and trouble.

Goot thinking about the manual. You can also try to find a full service manual which will be more expensive, but you'll have it forever. This is something I tell everyone that wants to work on their cars. A service manual is the first step, even before thinking about which tools you might need.

Totally get that! I ran into the same surprise on my buddy's 2020 Highlander when we swapped the rear bearings last fall. Driver's side was smooth, but that passenger bracket threw us off. We ended up grabbing the Toyota manual too, and it was worth every penny. Having the right info upfront saves a ton of frustration.
