Infotainment screen goes blank

Noticed something odd with my infotainment screen, it occasionally just goes black for a few seconds while driving, then turns back on like nothing happened and before, you ask, no It's not tied to bumps, temperature, or startup and everything else seems to work fine, but it's jarring when you're using navigation or music and it suddenly blanks out. So I dont know is this a software thing or...?

It seems like there might be a small issue with the software. Have you tried doing a soft reset? Just hold the hang-up button for about 10 to 15 seconds. Also have there been any updates or problems with Bluetooth or CarPlay when this happens?

Why do you think it's not hardware-related, have you ruled out a loose connection or screen fault entirely?

@HighlandCrawler and @Varson are both onto something with an intermittent blank screen. It might be a software glitch that a dealership can fix with an update, but it could also be a loose connection behind the dash or even a failing head unit.. since it's happening randomly, I think it's best to document when it happens and then take it to the dealership to have them diagnose it. The more info you can provide, the easier it will be for them to pinpoint the cause!

I'd also suspect a software glitch at first but @n3in.ja.45 can also be correct to suggest a failing head unit or a loose connection. A bad head unit might struggle to maintain a stable connection, causing those intermittent blackouts. If it's a loose wire, a mechanic would have to remove the dash to check the connections, so this is a bit more involved.

Either way, if you've already tried the software fixes without success, it's probably time to have a professional take a look!! It's better to get it diagnosed properly before it potentially becomes a bigger issue.

Been seeing random especially when switching between CarPlay and the native system screen blackouts too on my '20 Highlander. I did a software update last month, but it didn't help much.

Question, if it's the head unit, did you notice any other signs before it started failing? And for the wiring check, is that something a dealership usually handles better than an independent shop?
